INFJ Emotional Intensity Explained

I’m familiar with that sensation. You reveal a piece of yourself, perhaps just a fleeting thought, or possibly even a gentle delight, and then several hours later, your entire body will respond as though you’ve walked onto a stage unprepared.

Many INFJs find that experiencing strong emotions isn’t dramatic; instead, it’s part of everyday living.

Why Do INFJs Experience All Emotions So Strongly?

Many INFJs don’t simply experience emotions; they inhabit them. And while emotions usually do pass through fairly lightly, they can be quite overwhelming.

A feeling doesn’t simply come across lightly. Instead, it can flood a space, dramatically alter the internal weather patterns within the body, and affect all thoughts that follow it.

Joy can feel radiant. Disappointment can feel like the ground beneath you shifted. Even a relatively mild negative comment can land harder than expected.

A significant portion of this is due to the fact that many INFJs absorb emotional atmospheres before they are able to determine which parts belong to them and which parts belong to others.

Therefore, they can pick up on a variety of emotional undertones, including hesitation, warmth, disapproval, envy, and relief. Furthermore, they tend to realize both the expressed and implied.

This level of sensitivity can be wonderful; it allows for empathy, understanding, and real depth. However, this sensitivity also makes it difficult to achieve a completely neutral emotional state in life.

In my own experiences as a writer, I have found this to be true. On occasion, I write something very personal and open, and initially it feels free and almost liberating.

Then, later, if I receive feedback that is off base, too quiet, or slightly negative, the internal climate shifts.

It is unusual how rapidly one moment of openness can shift into uncertainty. Not because the authenticity of what was shared was incorrect, but rather because sharing oneself tends to elicit long-buried memories.

The Hidden Cost of Positive Emotions for INFJs

Most individuals understand why sadness or anger can be so overwhelming for an INFJ. However, few recognize that positive emotions can be equally debilitating.

Experiencing extreme joy, excitement, hopefulness, or pride can feel almost too vivid to contain. As such, there can be a desire to express these positive emotions immediately, as if they are bursting at the seams and require an outlet.

However, here lies a fine line. If that joyful emotion is met with warmth, it expands. It provides a nourishing effect. It can provide an electrifying sensation.

If that positive emotion is met with apathy, judgmental commentary, or subliminal envy, the potential fall from that high point could be dramatic.

Consequently, this is why many INFJs practice caution regarding sharing good news.

Many INFJs develop this habit through experience; they understand that not everybody will support or maintain their ability to hold onto happy sentiments without detracting from those sentiments.

Thus, many INFJs shield their joy much like one shields a candle from the wind. Not necessarily due to secrecy; however, due to recognizing how quickly a fragile inner light can be extinguished by external influences.

Why Does Criticism Hit INFJs So Harshly

Criticism is rarely purely informational for many INFJs. Criticism frequently enters their lives carrying energy.

Even if their rational mind understands a particular comment is unjustified, their physical body may respond as though something vital has been threatened.

Their chest tightens. Their stomachs drop. Their nervous system prepares for impact.

It is essential to consider the underlying pattern. While reactions to criticisms are typically a result of the immediate environment, they are not solely determined by it.

At times, one comment will touch upon an older area that has previously developed a belief that it is dangerous to be visible, to express oneself freely, to be overly enthusiastic, to be excessively unique, or to be excessive in general.

When this occurs, the reaction becomes larger than the original incident.

Consequently, intense emotions can create distorted perspectives. During these moments, everything begins to appear far more absolute than it actually is.

A minor criticism appears to prove something. A small miscommunication appears as rejection. An awkward response appears as justification to withdraw.

The individual experiencing these emotions believes what they are feeling is accurate; however, the conclusions they draw based on what they’re feeling are not always true.

How INFJs Can Protect Their Emotions Without Shutting Down

The solution is not to reduce the amount of feelings you experience. Rather, it is to increase your awareness of where your feelings reside.

Not all joys should be shared with everyone. Not every wound requires public expression. There is value in selecting a suitable receptacle.

Often, this receptacle is one person who trusts you entirely. Occasionally, it is a journal entry. Occasionally, it allows an exceptional experience to remain internally for a period prior to exposing it to the world.

I believe many highly sensitive individuals were raised under the impression that healing involves total transparency. But that is not always correct.

Healing sometimes looks like discernment. Growth sometimes entails realizing that privacy does not equate fear. It represents self-respect.

Because they are capable of perceiving life at higher levels of detail than most people, INFJs naturally experience all sensations strongly.

Sensitivity can drain you physically. It can also represent one of your greatest gifts.

The effort is not in developing callouses. The effort is in maintaining protection around what is vulnerable within you; staying aware of what creates turmoil; and understanding that your depth does not have to be defended in order to exist.
